I’ve been making video content for 15 years through my video production company, but I started uploading to YouTube and other online platforms consistently about five years.
After making over 1500 videos just on YouTube, I want to share a five-step process if you want to become a content creator or use video content to market your business.
1 - Find an ideal target audience
The biggest reason most content creators don’t make a full-time living is that they don’t know who they are making a video for.
They simply make content hoping the platforms will help them out and find their audience.
But you can speed this entire process up if you have an ideal person in mind when creating content.
You also need to have an interest in the topic you are covering or it will be hard to keep going during the first year.
2 - Create content the platforms want
Once you know who your ideal audience is, you have to decide what platform you want to use to reach them. Then, make content in the right format for the right platform. For example, YouTube prefers longer format content. If you take a small part of a YouTube video and post it to short format platforms like Instagram and TikTok, it won’t do well. For those platforms, you have to make content that is easy to consume and much more fast-paced.
You’ll need to spend time on each platform to understand what they like and tailor your content accordingly.
3 - Start with search content
YouTube should be at the center for all content creators. And creating content that people search for is a really easy way to get discovered when you are new.
4 - Have a content schedule
Becoming a content creator requires consistency. Most people create 10 videos and give up. But you need a monthly and yearly plan and you need to stick to that plan. It took me nearly a year to get 1000 subscribers on YouTube and now I can get nearly 1000 subscribers every day.
5 - Understand monetization
There are several ways to monetize your content. YouTube for example has a partner program, where they pay you 55% of the revenue they make from running ads on your videos.
TikTok and Instagram have a fund and they pay you for views.
But you have to go beyond that. You can learn about affiliate marketing, sponsorships, selling your own products and services, and several more monetization options.

Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.
A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.
Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. "This is your next record!" they told her.
That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.
One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.

While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.
With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key; The Lion King) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy;The Queen’s Gambit), Mario taps into his own power.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie features an extraordinary comedic cast, including Jack Black (Jumanji films) as Bowser, Seth Rogen (Neighbors franchise) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (American Dad!, Family Guy) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book) as Spike, plus a special voice appearance by Charles Martinet, who has voiced the characters of Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario games for more than 30 years.
The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part).
From Nintendo and Illumination—creator of the global blockbuster Despicable Me, Minions, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets franchises—The Super Mario Bros. Movie is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri p.g.a. and by Nintendo’s Representative Director and Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, after more than six years of close bond and discussions between the two. The film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
